Savremena’s students attend “School of Sustainable Development and Ecology” seminar

Savremena Gimnazija nurtures and promotes modern environment protection theories and an education system for sustainable development. These principles have earned us the title of eco-school, and along with it, the responsibility to motivate others by our example. In addition to a great number of campaigns and projects that take place at Savremena itself, our students often attend lectures, seminars and workshops on the subject. This time, the students of Savremena Gimnazija attended the seminar entitled “School of Sustainable Development and Ecology” organized by the Centre for Education and Social Emancipation of Youth (CEDEM), Faculty of Political Sciences’ Department of Social and Political Ecology and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development. The seminar, designed as a means of promoting sustainable development and the preservation of the environment, was held at the Stari Grad municipal building.

During this one-day seminar, Savremena’s students, in cooperation with the lecturers, defined the objects of education for sustainable development and discussed the effect of critical thinking on the development of civilizations, ecology and social sciences.

After lectures delivered by the vice dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences, an assistant from the same faculty and members of NGOs involved in the promotion of environmentalism and sustainable development, Savremena’s students concluded the following: Prevention is the key to success – i.e., further activities on raising the awareness of more people on the importance of the preservation of the environment and the importance of sustainable development. The awareness-raising strategy concerns the education of young people and the development of intersubject competencies in environmentally relevant subjects, and holding workshops and interesting lectures that would inspire students to change today’s planet-threatening habits.

Also, a new subject was proposed as an addition to primary and secondary school curricula, which would be dedicated to the key problems of contemporary industry and strive to awaken activism and environmental awareness in students.

At the end of the proceedings, the students heard from Zoran Martinov, the initiator of the “Cap for Handicap” campaign, who provided a detailed account of the campaign, its goals, and its development.

Savremena’s students leave seminar pleased and wiser

Here are some impressions of Savremena’s students who participated in this event.

The participants of the panel sent a clear message that it is up to us to protect the environment, primarily through changing our own bad habits, thereby creating a better future and raising the awareness of other young people in order to protect the natural wealth.

Aleksandra Mosurović, Savremena’s third-year student

Halfway through my first year in secondary school, I started researching sustainable development – what it means, what its goal is and how (and whether) I could facilitate the realisation of this goal. Until today, I have not thought that the task is so complex, and to be quite honest, I have not been aware that the situation has become so alarming. We heard four different panels, where we could learn about the world from another angle. The lectures helped me understand how an individual can affect society and how much damage humankind has made. And, perhaps most importantly, I became better acquainted with another very important topic and expanded my views.

Lara Veselinović, Savremena’s second-year student

Attending the “School of Sustainable Development and Ecology” seminar was a wonderful experience. The lecture has raised my awareness regarding the importance of environmentalism and the extent to which we, the individuals, can affect the world. I am very glad that I am now able to pass this knowledge on to my peers, so that we can work together on the preservation of our planet.

Klara Petrović, Savremena’s second-year student

During the one-day “School of Sustainable Development and Ecology”, we targeted the urgent environmental problems and shortcomings of the global industry and the world in general, as well as the specific eco-problems of our country. This seminar was very important for me, because it presented an opportunity to advance my knowledge about environment protection and sustainable development, and awaken a desire in me to actively work on the preservation of our planet. At the end of the seminar, we discussed the possible solutions regarding the advancement of the education system and the promotion of sustainable development.

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
