Savremena Gimnazija students participating in another eTwinning project „Heroe's journey”

Savremena Gimnazija students have been a part of another international eTwinning project since November, entitled Hero’s Journey, which is a part of the Erasmus+ programme.

The aim of this project is to raise students' awareness of the culture and mythology of each part of Europe by presenting the journeys made by heroes from mythology and ancient history across the European landscape. The students coming from the countries participating in the project are to choose areas and characters, legendary or true historic ones, that bear special relevance to their culture. The students are supposed to work in mixed groups and, through mutual effort, create the map of mythical Europe.

The technology will be used in the course of the project so virtual routes for each region are to be recreated. The result will be a project completed through cooperation, which will reconstruct legends of each region, the cultural heritage of each civilization and the artefacts surrounding us. In the course of the project, the students use information gathered from the resources available due to new technology and then share the information with other project participants, coming from Greece, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Serbia.

Foreign schools taking part in this project are the following:

Savremena Gimnazija teachers cooperating in this project are:

  • Darko Tmušić – history;
  • Ivan and Nevena Matejić – geography;
  • Uroš Mihajlović and Marica Đurić – philosophy;
  • Marija Pilčević Tomašević – the Serbian language and literature;
  • Natalija Stanković – Latin.

Creating a logo and a poster of the project was the task students were supposed to do; those selected as the best for their concept were considered the emblem of the project.

During January, the students presented the concepts coming from myths and legends typical of our region. You can get the impression of how it looked by watching the presentation prepared for that online-meeting.

Multidisciplinary research on the Trojan war: Literature, history, philosophy and geography joined together

During the month of February, together with their teachers, the students have been preparing to talk about the Trojan war. The preparation implied familiarising with the historical background of the Trojan war.

Though the Trojan war lasted for ten years, only some fifty days, depicted in Homer’s Iliad, have been thoroughly studied by the students. Destiny of heroes, impressive duels, gods’ intervention are only some of the topics Serbian teacher has focused on.

Philosophy teachers acquainted the students with the fact that in the ancient time Homer was studied by Herodotus and Aristotle. Later on, among the authors who wrote about Homer were Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Virgil, but also Byron, Schiller, Belinsky, Alexander Pope and Gladstone.
That Troy was a real city was proved by a man who had exclaimed as a seven-year-old I’ll discover Troy, while his father was reading him the Iliad. The man was Heinrich Schliemann. He had been fascinated by Troy and Homer all of his life. While he had been learning a lot of languages very quickly, travelling across America and Russia, trading, getting rich, studying, socialising with a Greek woman Sofia, who would become his wife, all the time his guiding thought and obsession was Troy.

Geography teachers have dealt with exploration and search for Troy and you can learn more about it from this video material.

Whatever was the topic of the online-meeting, the myth of the golden apple, the Trojan horse, Odysseus and all the characters and facts related to this topic, the students demonstrated a lot of interest, great level of knowledge and presentation skill.

New and even more interesting activities are planned for February and March and we will keep you posted.

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
