Geography teacher Senada Nikolić, along with the first-grade students of Savremena Gimnazija, has implemented a project on soil with the aim of developing students' awareness of environmental protection. During the project, a workshop was held on types of soil and their role in carbon cycling and climate change mitigation.
Several sciences were interconnected within the topic of soil
Through several presentations, students had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with different types of soil, its physical and chemical properties, quality, as well as the plant crops that can be grown on it. With the help of their teacher, students could easily conclude which types of soil are most prone to erosion, how vegetation cover affects erosion prevention, the importance of soil in the water purification process, and which layers of soil are the best natural filters for water purification.
Considering that we are witnessing pollution affecting this part of the planet, students have come to the conclusion about the time it takes for a pesticide to pass through layers of soil and how long it persists in it. In this way, several sciences are interconnected within the topic of soil, including biology, chemistry, geography, pedology, agriculture, and ecology.
The role of land in carbon cycling and climate change mitigation
The second topic of this project was "The role of land in carbon cycling and climate change mitigation". Through this topic, students were able to learn and explore the significance of organic carbon in the soil. By working on the project, students discovered that organic carbon in the soil has a significant role in climate change and is crucial for soil health, fertility, and food production, making the preservation and restoration of soil essential for sustainable development.
The students worked on their projects in small groups, nurturing a sense of cooperation, assistance, and belonging. What is most important is the satisfaction of the students and the teacher with the final outcome of their collaborative work.
