The second national festival "Science on Stage" took place at Primary School Savremena on Saturday, 23 September 2023. Representatives from Savremena Gimnazija were also among the 20 participants from different schools and cities across Serbia, and they presented a project titled "Scoby Dooby Do/Green Tea Bioplastic". The project was led by the art teacher, Zorana Milićević, and the chemistry teacher, Jelena Zelenović.
The project aimed to raise awareness among students about new materials that can replace plastic
The project "Scoby Dooby Do/Green Tea Bioplastic" received one of the four special awards at the competition, which featured over fifty different projects from all over Serbia. With this award, the project received recognition for its outstanding contributions and innovations in various STEM fields.
The project's goal is to use an interdisciplinary STEAM approach to interest students in the concept of bioplastics, make them research it and find its practical value, all in order to raise awareness about the use of biomaterials as alternatives to plastic. The project also wants to raise students' awareness of new materials that can replace plastic, so that we can, as individuals, contribute to the well-being of the planet. Students not only become familiar with Scoby culture but also cultivate it, study it, explore the chemical processes involved, and determine the practical value of this new material as a substitute for plastic.
