Since 2015, Savremena Gimnazija has been successfully organising and conducting field trips for its students. These field trips are designed as interdisciplinary connections between multiple subjects and involve the practical application of acquired theoretical knowledge from various subjects through observation, measurement, connection and project implementation.
This year's destination for Savremena graduates' field trip was Vršac, where students visited the Aviation Academy in October. Apart from offering a different style of education and the opportunity to creatively connect their knowledge in mathematics, computer science, physics and geography, the visit to the Aviation Academy provided a chance for career guidance and professional orientation in the field of aviation studies.
Students had the opportunity to listen to a brief lecture about the Academy (its history and admission possibilities) from their teachers, followed by a lecture on navigation and spatial orientation. During this lecture, they learned about the geographic coordinate system, how to determine latitude and longitude, as well as altitude and the significance of all these factors for pilots.
After the lecture, they worked on practical tasks using topographic maps. With the help of rulers and protractors, they determined the latitude and longitude of specific points, as well as the azimuth.
Airport runway, hangars, control tower, flight training simulators and a pilot's daily routine
The group was divided into two parts afterwards. The first group of students went to explore the Vršac airport runway and visited two hangars – one with operational aircraft and the other used for maintenance. During the tour, the fourth-graders learned about aircraft characteristics (speed, value, weight, flying methods, conditions, etc.), and they had the opportunity to see how they were repaired.
Meanwhile, the second group of graduates visited the control tower and learned about a pilot's daily routine, including collecting meteorological data, flight planning, flying and flight analysis. Students also had the chance to see and try flight training simulators used for pilot training.
Enhancing interest in learning and teaching
Field trips are aimed at students who explore their environment, catering to their needs and interests. By researching their environment, they actively engage with it and gain their own experiences. Such experiences and participation in activities are powerful motivators for both students and teachers, enhancing their interest in learning and teaching.
We are confident that this latest field trip provided Savremena graduates with new experiences and taught them valuable lessons in the fields of science, aviation, and, most importantly, friendship.
