Art lesson at exhibition of Picasso’s etchings

On Tuesday, 28 March, Savremena’s students visited the Heritage House so as to enjoy the exhibition of etchings created between 1930 and 1937 by Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest artists of all time.

Young aficionados of this renowned Spanish painter and sculptor had the chance to witness his unmeasurable talent and style that made him famous to this day, and expand their knowledge of printing techniques.

“Vollard Suite“: Inspiring etchings

The Vollard Suite exhibition comprises 27 sheets of various motifs and 73 sheets on five major themes: The Battle of Love, The Sculptor’s Studio, Rembrandt, Minotaur, and the Blind Minotaur.

These etchings were created at the incentive of Ambroise Vollard, a great collector and Picasso’s close friend. In addition to 80 sheets from the Vollard’s map, Savremena’s students saw 6 posters at the Heritage House, as well as 3 lithographs, 3 plates and a sketchbook. They learned about these works and how they were made, and apart from the curator who guided them through the exhibition, Art teacher Ana Manojlović further explained the techniques of drypoint and etching, used by Picasso to create these pieces.

Savremena’s students in Picasso’s shoes

In order to properly experience this technique, Savremena’s students showed their talent through a creative task. They put themselves in Picasso’s shoes and tried to recreate one of the pieces from the exhibition that made the biggest impression on them. This way they comprehended the significance of this skill, as well as the importance of having good technique in artistic expression.

After this artistic challenge, it became much clearer to them how hard it is to create a piece consisting of fewer elements than they were used to.

Strengthening the love for art

Savremena’s teachers know that we also learn outside the classroom, which is why they strive to provide their students with opportunities to develop art awareness through numerous cultural and educational visits and events.

This way, besides enriching their knowledge about art, the students can expand the limits of their own creativity, which is of crucial importance for their further development.

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
