“Reaching Out to Planet Earth”: Savremena’s students’ eco-journey

“Reaching Out to Planet Earth”, an event organised on 21 April by the Faculty of Geography to celebrate Earth Day, was attended by Savremena’s students who proved that their school is a real epitome of an Eco-school in Serbia.

The richer the knowledge, the healthier the environment

For this occasion, the Faculty of Geography hosted a series of lectures about the importance of raising eco awareness, and played interesting films about the problems regarding genetically modified organisms, biodiversity protection, water pollution, waste management and the extinction of bees.

What attracted the students’ attention the most was the lecture on “Carbon-less Serbia”, presented by Đorđe Samardžija, an expert in environmental protection. His talk on current eco problems, the extensive usage of fossil fuels for energy production, and alternative energy sources intrigued Savremena’s students (especially the idea of using solar energy, wind and water instead of harmful sources).

Savremena’s students also enjoyed listening to Aleksandar Petrović, who participated in the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. His lecture entitled “Road to the south” made them think about the steps they can take as individuals in the great endeavour of protecting our planet.

Participation in the “We’ve destroyed planet Earth” exhibition

Savremena’s students Natalija Stanković and Una Živković also made their contribution to environmental protection. The two of them took part in a photo contest on the topic “We’ve destroyed the planet Earth”, aimed at all secondary school students in Serbia. The two students and their teachers were greatly honoured by the fact that their photos were exhibited in the entrance hall of the Faculty of Geography during the event.

Raising eco-awareness as part of modern education

Savremena International School has marked Earth Day with a series of activities, while our students’ participation in this event has enabled them to learn more about current problems, envisage potential solutions and raise awareness about how important it is to protect the planet we call home, yet we harm on a daily basis on account of our negligence.

By participating in this and similar events, Savremena has once again shown that it’s an Eco-oriented school that cares about protecting our

planet and the environment.

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
Contemporary in any sense of the word, our school offers functional knowledge and quality preparation for tertiary education in Serbia and abroad. Implementing modern and creative teaching in the classroom, where the teachers’ pedagogy and students’ performance are aligned with the highest academic standards for the high-school finals, our school develops linguistic, mathematical, scientific, artistic, cultural, technical and ICT competence, which is a prerequisite for further education and professional development. Teaching is supported by the interactive whiteboards and educational software, whereas practice exercises research and critical thinking.
