Savremena International School devotes a lot of attention to developing awareness about environmental protection, which is why it joined a global awareness-raising campaign by celebrating Earth Day on 24 April with a series of fun and educational lectures and workshops.
Savremena’s contribution to the fight for environmental protection
In 1970, the United Nations stipulated 22 April as the day of the fight against environmental destruction. Today, this date is celebrated in more than 150 countries, including Serbia. Numerous activities and events aimed at raising eco-awareness, educating and motivating people are just a small part of what we should be doing every day in an active fight for environmental protection.
As eco-conscious Savremena’s students joined this event, their lessons were adapted to the occasion, and so they enjoyed a series of workshops and board games their teachers had prepared for them. This way, each class showed their knowledge about ecology and gave their contribution to environmental protection.
Education – prerequisite for eco-conscious behaviour
In order to understand the state of our planet, the problems faced by ecosystems and how they can improve the quality of the environment, Savremena’s students attended lectures by eminent environmental experts.
Ivana Jelić from the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia explained to Savremena’s students which species are endangered in our country, and also talked about protected natural resources.
Savremena’s students attentively listened to Ivana Guslarević, a representative from Wikimedia Serbia, who talked about the “Wiki loves Earth” project and its importance for raising awareness about protecting our planet. She also showed the students photos of national parks, nature reserves and protected areas in Serbia made for the contest supported by Wikimedia Serbia, the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia and the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia. Savremena’s students enjoyed the sights depicted in the photos, which motivated them to participate in the contest themselves next year.
Board game and sweet award
Savremena’s students tested their knowledge about ecology, general knowledge and other concepts related to the Earth in a fun board game.
Knowledge and luck played an important role in all rounds of the competition, and the students from II-1, Nikoleta Đorović, Đorđe Đerić, Marko and Miloš Latinović reached the winners’ podium by cherishing team spirit and great atmosphere, and unselfishly shared their sweet award with their friends.
Truly different environment day – bird shelters and new inventions
On this day, Savremena’s students awoke their investigative spirit and imagination while thinking of new ways of protecting the environment. They made bird shelters from plastic bottles, decorated them and prepared them for setting up in the parks around the city, after which they made up their eco-product which had to be both creative and practical.
Savremena’s students thought of names, slogans and advertising campaigns and made posters, flyers and promotional material for eco-bins that clean water surfaces and collect garbage, a revolutionary invention which would connect the parts of the damaged ozone layer, a machine that would pull out harmful ingredients from the soil and give it nutritive ones, and other unique inventions...
By considering products that would reduce the harmful effects on nature, Savremena’s students discovered new problems and acquired new information on the topic.
Joined forces for better protection of the planet
Everyday activities at Savremena International School allow students to learn about the ideas of recycling, efficient energy usage and environmental protection. But these activities accomplish something more important – they develop awareness about the global consequences of personal behaviour.
This is how Savremena once more proved to be a real example of an Eco-School in Serbia, and will continue to do so in the future.
