Savremena's experiment that can be done at home: Universal Indicator project

Savremena’s students will continue to attend classes from their homes. Students of the first and second grade of Savremena Gimnazija successfully realised an interesting project named the Universal Indicator. With the assistance of their chemistry teacher, Marko Piljević, Savremena’s students isolated anthocyanins from red cabbage and used them to measure pH values of various domestic products.

Vegetables as indicators – acidic or alkaline?

For the purposes of the experiment, and based on different colours of the resulting solutions, students determined the acidity and alkalinity of different products. In contact with anthocyanins, acids cause a decrease, whereas bases cause an increase of the pH value; so, the students obtained a palette of different colours with the help of red cabbage.

You can find interesting and creative videos of Savremena’s students below. Watch them to learn something new. Enjoy!

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
