Regardless of the Coronavirus situation, our teachers of history, English and sociology together with their students successfully carried out the planned project, which had to be slightly altered last year because cultural institutions had to be closed down last year.
In fact, this year the students visited the Museum of Yugoslavia and got acquainted with the lifestyle of the socialist Yugoslavia, the relay of youth and the presents former president Tito received from foreign statespeople and peoples from the constituent republics of Yugoslavia.
What students found especially interesting was the story on the last relay of youth, which itself is full of controversy. Additionally, they were amazed and surprised by the value and number of items in the gift collection.Only then did many of the students become aware of the significance and respect Yugoslavia used to have in the world then. During the visit to the museum, students’ task was to take photos of the most interesting exhibits. The reason for that was the task they had to complete upon return from the museum - they were expected to make a brochure for their peers who are not that keen on museum visits with the aim to attract and motivate their peers to visit this interesting museum after all. It was students’ task to select exhibits and create accompanying texts while using digital tools.
In this way, we as a school, wanted to introduce a form of practice, that is “Service Learning”, which is more and more accepted in the world. We are trying through our study programmes, to connect what the local community has to offer,on one side, with students' needs on the other. In this way, students are more motivated to learn through active approach, in this case, by spreading the message on the museum cultural institutions restore their popularity among the new group of visitors.
