Minja Ćirić, a Year 3 student, won first place at the national geography competition!
There were 160 competitors who came from all of Serbia, and having won this competition Minja qualified for the European Geography Olympics scheduled for June this year, where geographers of Minja’s age, from all of Europe, gather together. Thanks to the results achieved in the national competition, Minja is eligible to enrol in the Faculty of Geography without taking the entrance exam!
Minja’s love for geography and hard work resulted in great success
The national geography competition was held at the Faculty of Geography in Zemun and consisted of three parts. In the first, written competition segment students demonstrated the knowledge they had acquired during three secondary school years. The second part was a multimedia test comprising 40 slides with photographs and multiple choice answers. This part referred not only to geography but also to wider background knowledge. The third part required the participants to engage in field work, when students observed, wrote details, drew, made notes followed by the analysis of the practical part of the field work.
The preparation for the national competition had lasted since the beginning of the school year. Minja and his geography teacher, Ivan Matejić, did a lot of field work training. They did some practical tasks simulation, did mock multimedia tests etc. Minja’s success is the result of long hours of hard work and commitment, together with the teacher and on his own.
Each year our students achieve impressive results in geography competitions and through their love for this subject they show that geography presents us fascinating stories on the ever changing world.
Savremena Gimnazija is proud of Minja and wishes him success in the European Geography Olympics.
