Savremena Gimnazija Year 1 students had the opportunity to participate in the project Safe on the Internet, safe everywhere, organised by the Center for Education and Social Emancipation of Youth (CEDEM). The students listened to how to be protected in the digital world and how to use social networks responsibly.
Through attendance and participation at the conference Savremena Gimnazija students acquired knowledge and skills that will help them educate their peers and improve their digital competences.
The talks were held by:
- Katarina Jonev, eductor for the internet safety;
- Nikola Ristić, educator for work on social networks and media literacy;
- Igor Jurić, representative of Foundation Tijana Jurić.
Pajazit Pomak, CEDEM director, gave Milka Keser, Savremena Gimnazija head teacher, the certificate expressing gratitude to the school for its participation in the project.
Why is digital literacy in children important?
Though it offers vast possibilities, without thorough understanding of technology, the digital world could seem endless and confusing, and actually be dangerous. Therefore, digital literacy in children is very important for two reasons: more efficient use of digital channels and safety.
Children are a social group especially vulnerable with reference to cyberbullying. Because of that, it is important that schools, whenever it is possible, talk to children and parents about different kinds of abuse of the internet. Children should be advised on various issues, such as communication with strangers, unfamiliar adults on the internet, decent behaviour and concern regarding content sharing and avoiding conflicts.
