Developing functional knowledge and its everyday implementation in the teaching process require designing tasks and assignments as well as organising educational activities which induce students to connect concepts and apply what they have learnt, resulting later in students’ success.
This time Zorana Putniković and Marija Pilčević Tomašević, who teach Language, media and culture, Barbara Rosandić, a biology teacher and Zorana Milićević, an art teacher, joined forces and designed a project to remember, entitled Deconstruction and construction of an ad.
Firstly, the students analysed a printed ad, then a video commercial and the third task was the mutual one for subjects of biology. Language, media and culture and arts. The task required students to design an ad on organelles. These tasks had been preceded by numerous activities: learning about organelles, defining main features of an ad, analysing the language used in ads, the basics of brochure and poster designing while using Canva platform. Having analysed thoroughly all the elements of an ad (application of colours, various fonts, music, slogans…), the students could choose between creating an educational poster, the one in which an organelle would promote itself or a video commercial.
This approach to education enables students to enjoy learning, while gaining knowledge adequate for their age in a fun and engaging way. Upon completion of such successful interdisciplinary projects, students can’t wait for the next one and retention of the knowledge acquired this way is much longer as it is transformed into the functional knowledge.
