Due to the fact that the media have played an important role in our lives, media literacy is of key significance for understanding the world and critical thinking development. New media and content appear on a daily basis and it is up to us to extend our knowledge of media, to allow it to grow while developing a set of skills necessary for the 21st century.
Bearing that in mind, our teachers Zorana Putniković and Marija Pilčević Tomašević, through their school subject Language, media and culture, conducted the project Media literacy, this year again, for the Year 1 students.
Understanding the concept of media literacy and implementing practical knowledge
Our students had the opportunity to learn what the concept of media literacy is and to implement the knowledge they gained in the lessons when working on different tasks (news content analysis, clickbait titles, identifying strategies used by media content creators etc.). Independently, they chose articles for analysis and were good at spotting the difference between news based on verifiable facts and clickbait content.
Upon completing all the preparatory activities and tasks, it was easy for them to reach the main project goal – designing a media literacy brochure which would contain all they had learnt about it.
Regardless of how challenging creating a brochure could be, all the students did well, with some of them making a step further regarding their creativity and designs. The selection of the best works is available in the gallery.
We do believe that this is just one in the series of projects devoted to media literacy development meant for our students. Their impressions of the project are positive because not only had they discovered something new, and had fun while completing creative tasks, but they learnt something necessary and applicable in everyday life.
