Savremena Gimnazija Year 4 students had the unique opportunity to visit the Institute of Nuclear Sciences Vinča and do the experiments in physics, chemistry and biology last week of April. The team of people responsible for students consisted of Gvozden Tasić, one of the Institute managers, Nina Stevančević, physics teacher, Maja Timotić and Dijana Šarac, biology teachers and the last, but not the least, Jelena Zelenović, chemistry teacher.
The students did the following exercises:
- physics: measuring the activity of radioactive isotope 137 Cs using scintillation counter, at different distances from the source ;
- chemistry: observing the effects on organic matter when exposed to different acids (studying piranha solution) ;
- biology: demonstration of three basic tests for biological matter identification.
Hands-on activities confirming theoretical knowledge
Our students, overwhelmed with excitement after the visit to the Institute, were thankful for the opportunity to try out what they learnt in theory, stepping into the scientist’s shoes to observe the world, at least for a day.
