Belgrade celebrates its rich history through the "Days of Belgrade 2024," held from April 16th to 19th. This event, traditionally organized every year, is dedicated to marking two significant dates: the first mention of the name Belgrade in written documents in 878 AD and the day when Prince Mihailo Obrenović symbolically received the keys to the city from the Turkish authorities in 1867.
History and significance of the event
The central event of the "Days of Belgrade 2024" took place on Tuesday, April 16th, at 10 am at the Memorial Monument on Kalemegdan, where a music and drama program dedicated to the historical moment of handing over the keys to the city was held. The laying of flowers was performed by Nikola Nikodijević from the Temporary Authority. The ceremony began with a solemn procession that passed through Knez Mihailova Street, with the participation of city officials, the Music Orchestra of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, cadets from the Military Academy, the Cavalry Brigade, and citizens. During the ceremony, members of the Serbian Army performed a ceremonial salute.
During this event, second-grade students from Savremena Gimnazija, who, along with their Latin teacher Natalija Stanković, had been learning about the history of Singidunum, also participated in activities, integrating their learning into the real context at Kalemegdan.
"Days of Belgrade" not only provide an opportunity for celebration and remembrance of the city's historical moments but also for learning and connecting citizens with the cultural heritage of Belgrade.
