In March, Savremena Gimnazija is launching the Month of Empathy initiative, a project aimed at raising awareness about the importance of solidarity, understanding, and mutual support among peers. Through a series of workshops, visits, and humanitarian activities, our students will develop emotional intelligence and actively contribute to the community.
Why Is Empathy Important for High School Students?
Scientific research has shown that challenges are easier to overcome when we have support from our surroundings, and adolescence brings numerous obstacles – from academic responsibilities to social relationships. By developing empathy, high school students learn to better understand both their own emotions and those of their peers, fostering stronger and healthier relationships with family, friends, and teachers.
Empathy also encourages teamwork, improves communication skills, and helps young people develop a sense of responsibility in their interactions. Besides academic education, these qualities are key factors in personal growth. In an era where social media and digital communication dominate, nurturing genuine understanding and compassion is more important than ever before.
What Awaits Us at Savremena During the Month of Empathy?
As part of this project, students will participate in various activities, including:
-workshops on empathy and emotional intelligence – interactive discussions and exercises where students will learn to recognize others' emotions and communicate with understanding;
-humanitarian actions and volunteering – collecting clothes and essential items for the Drop-In Center and visiting organizations that support vulnerable groups;
-inspirational lectures – guest speakers from different fields will share their experiences and stories, inspiring students to reflect on the importance of empathy in everyday life.
The Month of Empathy is an opportunity for students to realize how even the smallest change can make a significant impact. Every activity contributes to creating a school environment where compassion and mutual support take priority, making the school a place where everyone has the chance to grow and develop into empathetic and responsible young individuals.
