Bowling in „Žabac” during PE

Savremena’s students had a chance on 26th and 28th October to either show or discover their skills and hidden talents in the bowling alley “Žabac” in Zemun Sports Centre “Pinki”.

The students acquired new moves, learnt a lot of interesting facts about bowling, competed in teams and, above all, had good time! They are quite impressed and happy about the new “fight” with the bowls.

What did the students learn about the bowling?

slika-6-(2)Bowling is seen as a relatively new sport, but according to certain legends and theories, the beginnings of this fun sport go back to ancient Egypt and the period of 3200 year BC. In those days, there were thin pins, stone balls and some curious stone rings in use for the game found in the Pyramids and sarcophagi.

Many years later, bowling started to expand throughout Europe under various names and different numbers of pins and lanes, and it is considered that the Spanish brought this sport to America in the 16th century. The first international competition in bowling was held in Germany, in 1891.

The rapid expansion of bowling as a sport and increase in popularity of this discipline can be attributed to its accessability and possibility of all generations to compete in it.

What are the rules of bowling?

slika-19Pins are placed by a machine in four rows, and together they form an equilateral triangle. Pins are allign in a way that one of them forms the first row, two are in the second, three are in the third and the remaining four pins are in the fourth row.

There are 10 pins in total (with marks from 1 to 10), where the pin number one is the first one in the row, whereas the last one with number ten is in the last row, all the way to the right. What’s more, the pins lie at a 30cm distance from one another, and in order to be counted they all have to be knocked down.

A bowler is allowed to have 10 rounds to knock down all the pins, and each round consists of two throws (with the exception of the last round, where there is a chance for the third throw). In the case a bowler knocks down all pins in one round, that is called STRIKE and in the next round the number of knocked down pins for him is doubled!

When it comes to the balls, they have to have a smooth surface and three holes for fingers. They mustn’t weigh more than 7.2kg, and depanding on the player there are different dimmensions and weights of the balls. Everybody should choose their own ball which they can use with ease.

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
