At the end of May, students from Savremena Gimnazija had the opportunity to spend some time with their peers from China. In fact, it was an online meeting that resulted from an idea that the students came up with in the first semester.
During the first semester, the organisation "Kombinat", as in previous years, announced an international literary competition for original short stories in English. Helena Krmpotić, a student from Savremena Gimnazija from class I-3, won third place in the competition among peers from different countries. Shortly after, Helena was presented with the award by a representative of the "Kombinat" organisation at the premises of Savremena Gimnazija. During that ceremony, the idea was born to connect our students with the students from China through online gatherings, considering that some representatives of "Kombinat" are involved in teaching English in China. In that way, they could exchange ideas and experiences.
Challenges faced by writers in today's post-literary world
During this first gathering, the main topic was dedicated to this year's literary award winners and the challenges they face in today's post-literary world. The guest at the meeting was a literature professor from Hong Kong University, who shared his perspective on that topic. Afterwards, students asked questions and pointed out the influence of the increasingly ubiquitous artificial intelligence in the field of writing.
Since the students enjoyed this form of interaction, we will make an effort to continue these activities whenever possible, allowing them the freedom to choose topics that are important to them and offering them the opportunity to discover whether the lives of teenagers on two different continents differ significantly and in what ways.
