At the start of the school year, first-year students from class I-4 had the opportunity to visit and explore the laboratory of Savremena Gimnazija, the Science Hub. This chemistry class provided them with a unique opportunity to learn about all the elements of the laboratory and learn how to identify and use chemical equipment.
Practical work and team collaboration
During the class, the students performed an interesting chemical reaction called the production of artificial blood. This reaction occurs by mixing iron (III) chloride and potassium thiocyanate, resulting in iron thiocyanate, which is characterised by its intense red colour.
The students were divided into groups and first learned how to properly measure liquids using a graduated cylinder. Then they prepared solutions for the chemical reaction. They dissolved a specific amount of iron (III) chloride and potassium thiocyanate in water, and then, using a pipette, added one solution into the other. During this process, they had the opportunity to observe and explain the colour changes, which further improved their understanding of chemical reactions.
This class not only enriched their knowledge of chemistry but also encouraged teamwork and creativity. The students were happy to participate in the activity and showed great enthusiasm for science.
