Elections in Savremena International school

Students chose class presidents and vice presidents on democratic elections.

On Wednesday, 20 October, the first electoral results regarding class presidents and vice presidents were announced in Savremena. Students circled two names on a sheet of paper which they afterwards put in a box, reflecting the style of real elections. After counting the votes, the committee announced names of presidents and vice presidents for each class.

The results in some classes were expected, whereas in others they were surprising.

The class of I-2 recognised its ladies as leaders and the ones whom they trust. The class of I-3 gave heed to patriarchal values and chose Stefan Mijailovic and Bogdan Veličkovic as their leaders, whereas the class of I-1 showed that they highly esteem gender equality and so the president Martin Ivanovic, who won by the majority of votes, got Anja Stojkovic as his chief assistant and an indispensable consultant.

The atmosphere in all classes was up to the task, and Savremena students showed that they knew the real meaning of “democracy”.

The class representatives' impression

A day after the announcement of the official results, in the hallway we came across Dunja Neskovic, the class president of I-2. To our question of whether she had expected to be elected the president, she responded that she hadn’t been hoping for the presidential position, but that she is sure that traits such as equity and understanding of students and their needs, as well as the fact that she is always there for her classmates, were actually the ones that got her that far. She is convinced that she will be a good leader, because managerial position is not a novelty for an ex president of the Students’ Parliament. She also claims to be excited and content.

While she was giving her statement, next to her where also the boy representatives of the class, so we asked them too to comment on the elections. Petar Radenkovic Zivkovic, also known as Peca, who was the pre-electoral favourite, told us that he was in the least surprised with the results.

The fact that the presidential position slipped out of his hands is something he can understand, but he says he expected at least the title of a vice president. he described the future rule of ladies as complicated and short-lasting, but he also said that the elections were fair and straight. Unlike him, Matej Trifkovic and Mateja Petrovic think that it was a “pure diversion”.

Pre-electoral speculations

We also found ourselves near student from the class of I-1 who was willing to comment on the election of Martin Ivanovic and Anja Stojkovic, but wished to stay anonymous. He agreed with our journalist that behind every successful man stands a successful woman, which is why Martin and Anja were chosen. The speaker also revealed that Martin didn’t prepare his campaign, but that he won all votes with his charm, intelligence and decisiveness. Our anonymous speaker also expressed personal satisfaction with the results and willingness to support Martin in his reign.

The class president of I-3 Stefan Mijailovic and the vice president Bogdan Veličkovic didn’t wish to make a statement, because they don’t trust the media and they don’t want their words to be misquoted. We also learned from unofficial sources that Stefan promised As in PE to all who voted for him, and threatened all opponents with an unstable position in the class.

We hope they justify the trust of the majority of students and use their presidential positions righteously.

I am extremely pleased and proud to be the parent of a Savremena student. During my first encounter with the school management, when I asked about my child’s potential enrolment, I saw how much love, enthusiasm and professionalism you put in your work. I was impressed by your approach, ideas and methods. I couldn’t believe something like this existed in our country! It doesn’t take long to realise that this is a school you would recommend to everyone. Creativity, modern technology, top-quality education, and most of all, the humaneness that can be seen throughout the school, make it truly different and worthy of its name – Savremena Gimnazija. With such an approach, the success of this school and, consequently, our children’s success, is unavoidable. Congratulations! Jelena Đorđević, Andrija’s mum
